In StartBright Bawnogue our youngest children have been exploring coloured rice in their play. They have been working on their motor skills of pouring and scooping with utensils they are familiar with from their environment. They engaged with both the materials offered but also just feeling the rice in their hands and exploring the properties and sensory experience. This experience is great for the youngest of children as it is open ended and allows them to engage with it in a number of different ways. Some explored the rice with touch, some observed the colours and how they mixed due to their pouring and moving the rice while others explored it orally, tasting it, curious to trial the texture in their mouth. This experience is all about the process and the learning that occurs throughout.
