Literacy is never cornered to one area or experience in our environments. It is placed throughout to allow children to engage with it meaningfully. Here we have the children in StartBright Greenhills exploring text and symbols in the home corner. Together they were looking at the pictures and pointing to foods they knew. This experience was built around communication looking after single words, learning new words and repeating words. Then then collectively had a discussion around their likes and dislikes in food. This links literacy into everyday situations not only developing the children’s language and vocabulary skills, but also learning about conversation skills, listening to others, understanding differences of opinions and reading body language of others. All so important for our communication skills and connecting with others.
